How much Miata does $4,000 buy? Before someone says “go check your local craigslist hur durr” the only two non shit hole ones on there are priced at $1 because of Craigslist assholes.

Flag the $1, and then email them saying yeah $1 is a great price!

4k$ can buy you a really decent NA or a beater-to-okay-looking NB. Trying looking for ones with glass softop windows that’ve recently been installed and/or hardtops. Now’s a good time to strike while the weather is cold, prices will go up in the spring.

A decent NA or NB here. You’ll likely have to do all the fluids and get new tires.

Why are they assholes for selling the car for $1? That’s a very generous price. See if they’ll take $0.75

I got a ‘96 with 130k on the clock, terrible paint and rusty rocker panels for $3500 if that help you get your bearings. You’ll have to take your pick between looks and mileage.
Here’s what I just made up... $4k should get you a pretty janky 100k+ mile turbo 1.6 NA, or a sub-100k mile stock 1.6 NA.
If you go 1.8 NA (which I recommend, no need to deal with a possible short-nose crank issue), you’ll be closer to 100k miles on the clock. Don’t even think about a turbo at this price, as any 1.8 will probably be a time bomb. Look for something with a roll bar.
Lastly, you can probably snag an NB with around 120-140k, but I never looked into NB’s because pop-up headlights kick ass.

$A pretty good one. Mine cost like 1.5k with a blown engine, then a $500 engine later, it was a 50k engine mile car for $2,000.

$4,000 for an NA Miata will get you the cream at the top.

It’s funny you ask, because I’ve bought 3 Miatas at or close to $4000.
Here’s a write-up on one: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/art-of-the-fli…
I also bought a ‘91 with 54000 miles, bone stock, no rust, cracked rear window, original paint, well kept interior...not show quality, but definitely in the upper end of Miata quality. $3800, but I’d call that a low price for that.
Also bought a ‘94 for $4000. 94000 miles, some chassis mods (roll bar, bigger front sway bar, rear strut bar, some chassis bracing), came with an OEM hardtop with defrost (market price: $1000) and had a ripped soft top. Some less than perfect paintwork, but no rust and a respectable looking driver.
All cars were bought in the Detroit Metro area.
Hope this helps you out!

A really good NA, which I think is what you should go for. However there are some positively spartan NAs out there. So prepare to sacrifice some creature comforts.
